Soft starter control is used to control an AC motor's in-rush current and torque during starting to help cut down wear on the motor and other system components. This "softening" of the start has been performed in various ways over the years, and the most common method in use today is the solid-state soft start controller. These controls typically use SCRs for a more controllable switching on and off of the motor due to the ability to adjust the start / stop time of the engine and starting torque. Some solid-state soft starts also integrate other benefits in technology, such as field buses or other communications capabilities for control and monitoring.
